Gisteravond 20 oktober zijn de International Golden Gnome Awards uitgereikt in een vol Paradiso. Met de uitreiking van de Awards, de internationale variant van de Gouden Kabouter, is het Amsterdam Dance Event 2010 officieel van start gegaan.

Wat in 1995 begon als een grap, met als hoofddoel de humor terug te brengen in de steeds serieuzer wordende uitgaansscène van Amsterdam, is vijftien jaar later dé Nederlandse Awardsceremonie van het nachtleven: de Gouden Kabouters. Vier Gnomes met Nederlandse winnaars dit jaar, voor Most Popular DJ Worldwide want die ging naar A r m i n    v a n   B u u r e n. C l u b   A i r  in Amsterdam ontving de Noisy Gnome voor de club met het beste geluid.  M i s s  F u z z y  kreeg een Future Gnome voor aanstormend talent en M y s t e r y l a n d  viel in de prijzen voor beste internationale festival.

160 DJs competed in 80 rounds for one of the eagerly wanted spots in the final round of the TWSTd DJ contest. Last Saturday was the big day for this fresh and young upcoming talent to compete and become the new best DJ.

I was standing in front of the Melkweg 20 minutes before midnight ready to hear some new sounds from new DJs. In both areas of the Melkweg two other concerts were about to finish, but both of them ended a little bit to late which resulted in a major busy Melkweg filled with hip-hoppers, Led Zeppelin fans and house lovers. It was fairly annoying for us and the TWSTd DJ Contest organizers because the contest started 45 minutes to late.

Because of this delay last years winner Kevin Arnemann couldn't open the night. I was bumped out because I've gotten to know Kevin's sound the last year and I really wanted to hear him play one of his tough techno sets. Luckily for me Miss Fuzzy, the 27 year old Aneta, opened the night with her very deep and hard techno set. She was the only lady behind the decks this night but she was the roughest diamond of them all. With 130 beats a minute she awakened everyone and got the party going right away. With her lips counting the beats she went all out for 45 minutes. Every once in a while she looked up for a confirmation of her friends and when she got the thumbs up she got a genuine but shy smile on her face.

After the techno-lady of the night the 26 year old Jordy Timmers, aka Mr. Timmaz lowered the BPM dramatically to a more housey level. It felt kind of strange to go from techno to house which resulted in a slow start for Mr. Timmaz. But he picked up the beat and showed the crowd his more housey kind of style. My compliments for that, because it's hard to get everyone going on house after a deep rolling techno set.

After these two DJs I was super excited for the next one because you don't really know what to expect. The element of surprise is one of those things these DJ contests bring a long, which makes a night like this extra special.

The 20 year old Tim Hoeben was next up behind the decks and the first thing I noticed was his confidence and excitement. He clearly had the best interaction with the crowd and in my opinion the best mixture of house and techno. With groovy melodies, familiar and unfamiliar tracks he melted these two genres together like he's done it his whole life. I most certainly jumped up and down on his beats and when I looked around I saw hands in the air in the whole room. Usually only the front line of fans is this enthusiastic but this time even the people getting their drinks had their hands up!

Last but not least: South District. This young man from the south of the Netherlands took a busload of supporters with him. After two house DJs it was once again time for more techno orientated music. He was not as tough as Miss Fuzzy was. He created more melody and had a groovy vibe throughout his whole set. In my opinion he was the righteous winner of the evening but the votes of the crowd and jury turned out other wise.

As soon as South District was done Steve Rachmad and Wouter de Moor took care of us with a b2b set. While these two were playing the last tunes everyone had the chance to hand in their voting form with their favourite pick of the night. While this was in process the judges got together to discuss who could mix the best, had the best sound and best attitude behind the decks.

A little bit before 5am the votes were counted and I was super excited to see who won. Strangely enough a lot of people seemed to have left the building and missed out on the most important part of the night: The announcement of the 2010 TWSTd DJ Contest winner.

Martijn Mischgofsky, the face behind the TWSTd DJ Contest, got up on the stage and first announced the winner the public chose. After an imaginary drum role he screamed through the mic: TIM HOEBEN! The crowd went crazy and so did Tim. When the crowd calmed down Martijn couldn't let us wait any longer. “And now, the winner of the jury price is…” Everyone held their breath.. “ TIM HOEBEN!!” Tim jumped in the air and the whole crowd screamed like he won an Oscar! Last years winner Kevin Arnemann also one both prices. This clearly shows that Tim deserved his price!
And of course there can't be just one winner. Mr. Timmaz won the second jury price of the evening.
This upcoming Thursday Mr Timmaz and Tim Hoeben will perform in the Sugar Factory during MIKO. The sign up for next years contest has started and I'm already looking forward to the next finals!

Op zaterdag 20 maart vindt in Melkweg de finale van de Dommelsch TWSTd DJ Contest plaats. Een deskundige vakjury zal dan uit de vier overgebleven finalisten de meest veelbelovende DJ van Nederland kiezen. Naast de vakjury kiest het publiek haar favoriet, die beloond wordt met de publieksprijs. Wij stellen de finalisten aan jullie voor.

Waar heb je in het verleden al gedraaid? Vorig jaar heb ik op het ‘Burning Man Festival’ in Nevada gedraaid; vette ervaring, veel dust en leuke mensen. In Chicago en New York heb ik in een aantal uderground clubs opgetreden. Verder heb ik op Hooft, een feestje van Jan Liefhebber, Klup (Groningen) en op de Sonne Mond Sterne camping gedraaid. Daarnaast ben ik resident-dj geweest van ‘What is On Your Mind on Tuesday night’ in Korsakoff Amsterdam.
Wat is je goede eigenschap als dj? Gepassioneerd en vernieuwend.
Beschrijf je ervaring van de halve finale van de TWSTd DJ contest? Dat was een moeilijke klus. Als vrouwelijk dj vond ik het best spannend. Want er werd meer van mij verwacht, maar ook motiverend, want ik heb veel tips en goede adviezen gekregen van  professionele artiesten.
Hoe moeilijk is het om in Nederland door te breken? Als je er alles voor over hebt; je tijd, liefde en oprechte enthousiasme in steekt, kom je erachter dat doorbreken niets met geluk te maken heeft, maar met het feit dat je het waard bent.
Wat heb je er tot nu toe voor gedaan? Tot nu toe heb ik veel naar ander dj-sets geluisterd, op zoek naar een eigen muziekstijl. Kort geleden ben ik begonnen met produceren.

Wat zijn je toekomstplannen? Dat hangt een beetje van de Finale in Melkweg af. Daarnaast wil ik leren produceren en mij netwerk uitbreiden.
